actuary. Contrary to popular belief, it isn t just good looks and a sparkling personality. On second thought, maybe those aren t requirements at all& <br> <br> Now that we have gotten an attempt at actuarial humor out of the way, on to the real point of this article& First of all, what is an actuary? Actuaries are experts in measuring and managing risk. They evaluate the financial impact of current trends on future events. You will find the majority of actuaries in the financial industry, particularly working with or for insurance companies.<br> <br> What does it take to be an actuary? A candidate must have an aptitude for math, finance, and economics. However, there is no requisite degree that you must obtain in college. The real answer of how to become an actuary is found in the exam process. There are a strenuous series of exams that a candidate must pass to become a credentialed actuary. Along the way, you must choose what type of actuary you want to be.<br> <br> In general, there are two main branches for actuaries that practice in the United States. Those that work in the property and casualty field are members of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and those that work in the life and health field are members of the Society of Actuaries (SOA). The primary focus of this article is on property and casualty actuaries. The first four exams are considered preliminary exams. They are offered jointly by the CAS and the SOA. They cover topics including probability, financial mathematics, financial economics, life contingencies, statistics, and construction and evaluation of actuarial models. These exams are multiple choice and take approximately 3 to 5 hours apiece. A rule of thumb for preparation time is about 100 study hours per test hour. For any given exam, typically between 35% to 50% of the candidates who take an exam will pass it. However, it is not unheard of for the pass rate to be less than 30%.<br> <br> In addition to the preliminary exams, a candidate must also demonstrate proficiency in applied statistical methods, corporate finance, and economics through a process called Validation by Education and Experience (VEE). The typical methods to receive credit are to provide evidence of college courses taken in these subjects or through standardized examinations or other educational experiences.<br> <br> Once the preliminary exams are completed, an actuary usually chooses whether they wish to pursue membership in the CAS or the SOA. color:black'>To become an Associate in the CAS (ACAS), a candidate must pass exams 1 through 7, attain credit for the three VEEs, and pass the CAS Course on Professionalism. Once these requirements have been completed, an application is submitted along with two letters of reference to the CAS Executive Council. Once the ACAS designation is attained, the candidate may become a Fellow in the CAS by passing the last two exams. Based on a report issued by the CAS in 2009, the median time between first exam and attaining the ACAS designation is about 7 years. To attain the Fellowship in the CAS (FCAS) designation, the median time is about 9 years. Because there is no time limit on how long it takes to complete the requirements to become an ACAS or FCAS, the distributions of time to become credentialed is skewed with a heavy right tail. It takes some candidates 20 or more years to become credentialed. There are currently a little more than 5,100 Associates or Fellows in the CAS.<br> <br> The majority of actuaries in the United States, whether they are in the CAS or SOA, are also members of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA). The AAA s mission is to serve the public on behalf of the US actuarial profession. Two key areas of focus for the AAA are public policy and professionalism. To join the AAA, an actuary needs to already be a member of another approved actuarial organization and either a resident of the US or demonstrate their familiarity with U.S. laws and practices in their actuarial practice area (eg casualty, health, life, and pension).<br> The AAA issues qualification standards for actuaries who issue opinions in the US. For property and casualty related companies, the individual issuing the opinion should be a member of the AAA or a Fellow or Associate of the CAS, have three years of actuarial experience, and be knowledgeable of the Law applicable to the Statement of Actuarial Opinion. Opinions can be issued by members of other actuarial organizations as long as the individual meets other criteria and has demonstrated appropriate experience and knowledge. In addition, actuaries are required to complete and document at least thirty hours per calendar year of relevant continuing education.<br> <br> It takes a lot of time and effort to become a credentialed actuary.
